Standard work

Standard work is a key component of lean management systems it is used to define a single operator’s sequence of operations while performing a task.

Standard work templates are used to document the baseline of a continuous improvement so that each step can become standardized and improve from the time before.
There are three key elements to standard work. These include:
  • Takt time which is the rate products are made in a process to meet customers demand. Takt time is the pace of production required to meet customer demand. This may include work in process or in queue.
  • Work sequence in which a process operator performs tasks within the takt time.
  • The standard inventory required to keep the process operating.
Standard work helps to reduce variability in a process and improve performance by monitoring the time each step takes.

Standards and standardization sent forth the rules for how a task is completed. Standardization occurs through making a process repeatable. This enables the user to create a consistent process.
